As my kids have grown, I finally have time to read again, about 20 to 30 books a year, mostly on business. This year I also tried philosophy and literature, and one book sat by my bed for nine months: Erik Larson's The Splendid and the Vile. It tells the story of Britain in 1940, as Churchill becomes prime minister and leads the country through its darkest hour. He has to ask America for help without sounding too optimistic or too pessimistic. It isn't a thrilling war book but a careful picture of life under the shadow of war. What struck me most was how ordinary Britons kept living properly: sunning themselves in Hyde Park in the morning, shopping on Regent Street at Christmas, proposing and marrying under the bombers, opening champagne when there was something to celebrate. In the Battle of Britain, overestimating the enemy pushed the British to fight twice as hard, while Germany kept changing targets and lost its chance. The book made me think of the question: if you had one year left, how would you live? We don't keep going because there is hope; we see hope because we keep going. Whatever this year brings, the choice of how to live is always ours.

其中一本在我床边陪伴了我整整 9 个月的书,就是 Erik Larson 的《至此一年》(The Splendid and the Vile)。
