English summary available ↓
A short note on a passage from Warren Buffett. He writes that equal opportunity should begin at birth, and that extreme look-at-me styles of living should be legal but not admirable. As a family, he says, they have had everything they needed or simply liked, but they never sought enjoyment from the fact that others craved what they had. I include my own Chinese translation of the passage alongside the original English. What I take from it is the philosophy of the old man, as Chinese readers affectionately call him: money is not the end point of a life. One of the richest people in the world chooses not to make his wealth into a show, and not to take pleasure from other people's envy. Wealth is not the final goal of life; it is a tool for living a life that means something.
