ENGLISH SUMMARY

On a ZARA perfume box I saw: a collection created by Ms. Jo Malone CBE, founder of Jo Loves. Jo Malone founded Jo Malone London and sold it to Estée Lauder, along with the commercial use of her name for fragrance. After a serious illness and leaving the company, she came back with a new brand, Jo Loves: if she couldn't be Jo Malone, she could still be the Jo who loves perfume. Her ZARA collaboration brings that name to an affordable price, and Estée Lauder sued, arguing it confuses customers. The interesting question isn't the scent or the price. It is whether a founder who sells a brand bearing her own name can keep using that name. To the buyer, the name is an asset they paid for. To the founder, a name isn't a logo or packaging. It is the person herself. You can sell a company, but you can't stop being yourself. Founders think about sales, cash flow, growth and exits, and only at signing realise some things are about identity. In the end, a brand's most valuable asset is how customers see it, and once that is written into a contract, it becomes property and a boundary. Still, as a plain guy: Jo Malone at ZARA prices? I'd buy the ZARA one.

A collection created by Ms. Jo Malone CBE, founder of Jo Loves.

A collection created by Ms. Jo Malone CBE, founder of Jo Loves,旁边是 Fashionably London 香水瓶

Jo Malone,
