ENGLISH SUMMARY

F1 is back at Sepang, this time as the Bahrain Grand Prix held in Malaysia, the first race there since 2017. Explaining the sport to my wife, I wondered what it costs to run a team. Mercedes' 2025 accounts show about £633 million in revenue and £167 million in operating profit: an F1 team is no longer a toy a carmaker burns money on, but a profitable business. F1 paid about US$1.4 billion to the ten teams in 2025, and title sponsors reportedly pay US$80 to 110 million a year, so every logo on a car is inventory. Mercedes' commercial revenue alone was about £415 million, and the marketing value of being seen racing every fortnight is huge. Teams now look like sports franchises: there are only 11 of them and 22 race seats. But the real winner is F1 itself, the platform, with revenue close to US$3.9 billion: cities, broadcasters, sponsors, corporate guests and fans all pay for the same attention, again and again. What F1 sells is not 22 cars but a scarce position in an ecosystem that hundreds of millions watch. In many businesses, what is truly valuable isn't the product, but owning a position others keep paying to be close to.

2026 年行业估算,PETRONAS 给 Mercedes 的 title sponsorship 大约 US$80 million 一年,Oracle 给 Red Bull 大约 US$110 million,Ferrari 的 HP 大约 US$100 million,McLaren 的 Mastercard 大约 US$90 million。

因为 Mercedes = Formula 1 = Performance = Technology。

2025 年 F1 revenue 接近 US$3.9 billion。
