Ecosystem
English summary available ↓
The Renaissance wasn't planned by a group of artists and thinkers. The Black Death shook Europe's social order, population and authorities, and humanism, art and new ideas grew through the cracks. Many great things grow out of chaos, failure and accident rather than design, and startups especially. I'm now wary of projects that start as an ecosystem: integrate the value chain, solve supplier, merchant and consumer problems, add AI, data, payments, logistics and community, draw a beautiful flywheel and promise to change the industry once everything connects. In PowerPoint everything connects. Often the founder isn't stupid but too clever, planning the fifth business model before the first product is proven. I prefer the word entrepreneur to founder: someone facing chaos, uncertainty and scarce resources every day, still clear on what matters most now. Real startups look clumsy: solve a real problem, continue if people use it, continue if they pay, and discover much of what you assumed was wrong. Google started by making search better; Facebook started as a way for college students to find each other's profiles. We look at great companies and assume their founders foresaw everything; usually someone stitched the story together afterwards. Vision can be big, but execution must be small enough to do tomorrow and get feedback. A plan is a hypothesis; the market is the answer. If a platform or ecosystem grows in the end, great, but it should never be the starting point.

Founder
