Malaysian politics, the World Cup and Pinduoduo's arrival all seem to force us to pick a side. Support one party and you must hate the other. I'm an England fan, but I've also followed Messi for more than twenty years and like Cristiano Ronaldo too. England lost to Argentina, and I still admire this Argentina team. When Pinduoduo came to Malaysia, many people's first reaction was that local merchants would die and the government should ban it. Those worries aren't wrong, but why can't we support local merchants and also study what Pinduoduo does better? Political philosophy has a long tension between liberty and equality, more like a seesaw than opposites: more liberty brings competition and innovation but wider gaps; more equality brings protection but less competition. Isaiah Berlin separated negative liberty, not being stopped, from positive liberty, having the capability to pursue your goals through education, healthcare and infrastructure. Mature societies keep balancing the two. Adam Smith's invisible hand never meant government does nothing; it means setting rules, upholding law and preventing monopoly and fraud. Government should protect competition itself, not any one company. If a competitor burning money for a few months scares a whole industry, maybe the problem is our business model. Having a position is fine, but don't let it take away your ability to appreciate, learn and correct yourself. What matters is whether the system makes everyone better.

C Ronaldo?
