ENGLISH SUMMARY

SpaceX had just raised around US$75 billion in its IPO, and less than two weeks later it was in the bond market. My first reaction: didn't it just get all that money? Then I saw it isn't only SpaceX. Alphabet recently did an equity raise of close to US$85 billion, Amazon issued around US$54 billion of bonds, Oracle plans to raise US$45 to 50 billion, and Meta and Nvidia each issued around US$25 billion in bonds. Apart from SpaceX, these are hugely profitable, cash-rich companies, which is exactly why the market is eager to lend to them. So why raise? In the 2010s startup era, funding meant hot money chasing market share, subsidising users and valuations on revenue multiples: I haven't proven I can make money, but I'll prove I can get big. This AI round is different. AI is no longer just software; it is becoming a heavy-asset industry that needs data centres, GPUs, power, land, cooling and long-term energy contracts. Whoever secures compute and power first holds a position for the next five to ten years. These companies are bullish on AI, but they know the fight is expensive and markets may not stay open, so a CFO locks in long-term money while the window is open. Funding used to buy speed; today it buys time and certainty. What matters isn't the raise but what the money becomes: if it just keeps losses going, it only delays problems; if it becomes faster turnover, lower costs and bigger infrastructure, it's leverage.

Alphabet、Amazon、Meta、Nvidia
