We usually analyse customers with profiles: age, gender, income, job, family and use cases, then guess what they should need. Liang Ning's book Real Demand asks a different question. Someone owns a home but no TV: maybe he simply doesn't want one. When basics were scarce, lacking something meant needing it. In an age of oversupply, most demand is elastic, and not having something often just means not wanting it. So beyond the user profile, look at the user persona: who people believe they are, or want to become. Tmall's persona labels, like the princess on the run or the fussy camper, group people by self-image, not income. A profile shows what someone lacks; a persona shows who they want to be. And the more people own in an area, the more they keep buying, because it is how they express themselves. Today's product question isn't only what customers lack, but which version of themselves they are willing to spend on. Clothing is the most direct daily expression of that persona. That may be the real demand.
