ENGLISH SUMMARY

foodpanda announced it will leave Thailand on 23 May 2025, ending 13 years there. The delivery platform that boomed during the pandemic is quietly exiting, with cumulative losses of 13.8 billion baht and only about 15% market share, far behind Lineman Wongnai and GrabFood. Its parent Delivery Hero is moving resources to higher-return markets. To me it marks a watershed for Southeast Asia's platform economy. Talking with a mentor, we discussed Grab. It began under the sharing-economy banner: anyone could use spare time to drive and earn extra. Today many Grab drivers take loans to buy RM60,000 cars and drive full time. The car is no longer an idle resource but a tool for survival, and drivers carry all the costs while following the platform's rules and commission. Traditional taxi drivers may have paid around RM30,000 for a permit, with maintenance and insurance borne by the operator. So founders should look beyond traffic at the structure of responsibility: who owns the assets, who bears the costs, who controls cash flow. Any model that can't create balanced value for platform, users and service providers won't last, and without working unit economics and self-sustaining cash flow it isn't a sustainable business. The models that keep running aren't the flashiest but the steadiest: profit on every order, customers who come back, positive cash flow. foodpanda's exit may end an era, or begin a more grounded one.

Grab,

不是看 GMV 多高,而是每一单能不能赚钱;

不是看用户数多少,而是客户愿不愿意留下来、重复购买;
