English summary available ↓
Soon after the food delivery war, Alibaba launched Amap's street rankings, using its map app as a super gateway to go after Meituan's core: commission and online marketing revenue. Amap has huge daily and monthly user numbers and is a natural entry point for local life, and in the past month, the post notes, Meituan's shares fell 22 percent while Alibaba's rose 36 percent. Investors think Alibaba is serious this time. But Ele.me, Amap and Taobao had all been there for years. Why didn't they work before? The key is organisation. Alibaba had classic big-company disease: business units fighting over resources, chasing separate KPIs, competing and draining each other, like several hilltops in one company. After the restructuring, resources were shared and teams connected, so Ele.me, Amap and Taobao could finally throw a combination punch. That raises a question: Founder Mode or Manager Mode? Founder Mode takes risks, breaks rules and pools resources; Manager Mode manages by KPI and avoids risk but rarely breaks through. Alibaba had drifted into Manager Mode and now seems back in Founder Mode. There's no standard answer for when to use which, but big-company disease is dangerous. BlackBerry was number one and vanished in a few years. Stop moving and you get eliminated. Even Cao Cao, the 'corporate' at Red Cliffs, was burned by a few makeshift startup teams.
Read full English version →
- 不同 BU 各自为政,互相抢资源;
- 资源共享,不再各自为政;
Manager Mode?
- Founder Mode:
