Critics say Ghibli-style AI images have no soul. I partly agree, but here is what using AI at work taught me. I run digital marketing in my company myself. About six months ago the big e-commerce platforms rolled out GMV MAX, ad systems driven by deep learning. I tried it and quickly gave up because it felt uncontrollable: money spent without knowing where the ads showed, with results reduced to one ROAS number. I also had some ego: after years of running ads by hand, how could I lose to an AI system? Reality slapped me. ROAS kept falling for months despite rebuilding and switching models every week. In February, after a long talk with a platform account manager, I finally understood the logic and tried again. The real question became: where is my edge? Manual buying is about finding exactly who will buy and putting the ad in front of them, but AI is far better at finding people. So we went back to our real strength, the product, investing in quality and experience people will pay for rather than just low prices. A good product plus AI finding the right people is the best combination. Content is the same: a Ghibli-style picture of my kids is precious to me because it has feeling. AI has no soul, but when we put our heart into products, content and brands and use AI to reach the people who care, it becomes an extension of our soul.

GMV MAX
