Founders are sharing news that Big Caring plans to list in Kuala Lumpur next year: about 600 stores and a very large valuation and raise, a scale the local market hasn't seen in a while. What interests me more is why pharmacies have become a 'good business' in the eyes of capital right now. Working in mother-and-baby for the past two years, I feel that sector is in a structural decline few people see. It isn't that brands aren't trying; the birth rate is falling too fast. And the category has a built-in fate: a very short customer life cycle. Once a child can walk and use the toilet, the need for diapers ends; formula is the same. GMV looks big, but every year you must acquire new customers and pay a new CAC. Pharmacies are the opposite. Someone diagnosed with high blood pressure at 50 becomes a long-term customer, visiting monthly and adding supplements and devices, possibly for 30 years. That is an LTV mother-and-baby can never reach: a pharmacy sells a life cycle, and the silver economy is demand that grows by itself. But once everyone understands an industry, capital floods in, chains expand and price wars start, squeezing drug margins. To judge an industry, look at competitive structure, customer life cycle and the speed of capital entering, not current heat. Sometimes the biggest risk is that everyone thinks it's too good.
