English summary available ↓
ENGLISH SUMMARY

Before the pandemic McDonald's replaced its ordering boards with LED screens, and most of us read it as cost cutting and digital upgrade. Looking back, it was the starting point of a long-term strategy to bring AI into some 40,000 restaurants. McDonald's serves around 70 million customers a day, but its data structures differ by country, region and even store, so running AI across it seemed almost impossible. Instead of rushing to use AI, it did the hardest, least sexy thing first: laying foundations. In 2019 it bought into AI company Dynamic Yield; in 2020 it launched Accelerating the Arches, an organisation-level decision to make digital the growth engine. For the next three years it built almost no flashy AI applications, quietly unifying systems, integrating data and rebuilding its architecture, then moved its data to Google Cloud. Only then could AI really run. Now AI monitors orders and food in the kitchen, checks for missing items with cameras, guides staff through equipment problems by voice, and plans each day's production. The result is steadier service, less waste and less stress. Menus in the drive-thru are generated in real time based on weather, inventory and targets, and the app remembers what you eat. McDonald's didn't put AI in one department; it wove AI into every action. Never underestimate patient big companies. For founders chasing trends and features, the lesson stings: foundations are never sexy, but without them AI is just a performance.

App
