ENGLISH SUMMARY

A headline from AEC news said that by 2060 Malaysia's Chinese population would fall to around 15%. The comments were full of sarcasm. I don't want to talk politics, but about data, statistics and prediction. Malaysia's birth rate keeps falling, with couples averaging fewer than two children, yet the population still grows because people live longer. And is it still true that Malays have many children? Many stable, well-paid Malay families now have one or two, much like Chinese families, because economic conditions affect the whole society, not one race. As Factfulness argues, what decides how many children a family has is not religion, culture or race, but economic status. The blind spot is assuming a trend will continue forever. China's one-child policy was meant to prevent famine, but nobody foresaw how fast farming technology would advance, and today the problem is an ageing population. Founders, me included, are easily led by data. A trend is not a certain future, because acting on it can change the conditions that produced it. Entrepreneurship is finding a problem, setting a goal, and measuring, testing and adjusting continuously. Should businesses switch fully to the Malay market? Maybe not: as economies improve, fertility across groups tends to converge, so the 2060 ratio might look much like today. This is a sceptical guess, not a certainty. Data is a reference, not the answer.

《Factfulness》
